- Sutton was originally named as Sudtone, which relates to Old English for “suth” (south) “, tun” (farm). It was recorded as such in the famous Domesday Book.
- In 1558, King Henry VIII built a grand Royal Palace in Sudtone, now Sutton, called the “Nonsuch Palace”. It was named as such because it was considered so spectacular that it was considered there was no such thing like it. Unfortunately, it was torn down in 1682 by King Charles II to pay his mistress, Lady Castlemaine’s, gambling debts.
